Nowadays, the colourful universe of the superheroes’ is well-known, especially in its cinematographic version: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and other Avengers meet up on our cinema screen and never stop fighting for the first rank at the international Box-Office, season after season. However, the “comics culture” which appeared in the middle of the 1930’s (Superman was born in 1938) is relatively unknown from the general public although it totally belongs to and influences the occidental imagination.
As a patrimonial institution, the Maison d’Ailleurs has decided to pay tribute to these superheroes – mythical figures of humanity – by adopting an original perspective: that of the contemporary art. Indeed, there are countless artists, photographs and sculptors who borrow from the comics’ aesthetic and use it to speak of our own (post)modern situation. This exhibition will recall us that, somehow, we are the superheroes.
